Before and after
The brief
The back of the house had a raised timber deck that had come to the end of its life, sitting above a garden that dropped away and held water. It needed to come out and be replaced with something that would last.
What we did
Everything came out down to soil. We dug and compacted a proper sub-base, built a retaining wall to hold the level of the raised terrace, then laid porcelain across the full width of the house with steps down to the lawn. The garden was regraded so water runs away from the house rather than sitting against it.
The result
Porcelain does not go green the way natural stone does and needs very little looking after. The level change that used to be a rickety step is now a proper set of steps the width of the terrace.
Scope of works
- Strip out and dispose of old decking
- Excavation and compacted sub-base
- Reinforced retaining wall to the raised terrace
